Charcoal Value Study: Plastic Golf Ball
Size 18 x 24 inches
Concepts: Value, Line, Positive and Negative Space, Balance
Steps:
> Tape one plastic golf ball to a piece of paper. Sit in an area that provides adequate lighting and allows you to see strong value changes.
> Completely darken the background of your white paper with very soft charcoal. You may want to use masking tape to create a crisp, white border around the paper.
> Draw the ball with a hard charcoal pencil, filling up most of the negative space on the paper. Note the placement of the shadow. Decide if you want to place the charcoal ball in the center of the composition.
> Using erasers and more charcoal, continue rendering the ball so that you accurately achieve the lights and darks you see on the object.
